Analyst: Paramountâs Decision Date On Redbox Looms
Paramount Home Entertainment will by Dec. 15 decide whether to extend or opt out distributing new release DVDs via Redbox, according to Merriman Curhan Ford financial analyst Eric Wold. Comcast Accelerates Streaming Service Rollout
After a successful trial run, cable giant Comcast is poised to accelerate the rollout of its Hulu-esque online programming service by the end of the year. The biggest remaining hurdle is how quickly Nielsen can begin generating ratings for programs that are viewed online through the Comcast on Demand Online (CODO). Comcastâs service differs from Hulu in that it is only available to users who already subscribe to Comcast cable service and are given a password in order to view programs online on an on-demand basis. Earlier this week, Netflix announced its streaming service would be available on networked PlayStation 3 consoles. Now comes talk that the service could come to Nintendoâs Wii as early as the holidays. Netflix streaming has been available on Microsoftâs Xbox 360 for about a year; the addition of both PlayStation 3 and Wii could give the video renter crucial connectivity to household TV screens. CEA Launches Metadata Study Group
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) is seeking participation in a new Metadata Study Group to study how and where metadata is used. The group plans to make recommendations concerning CE products receive, share, process and display metadata. It also will study the need for CEA relationships with other organizations, as well as the need for coordinated standards development. Sears To Offer $149 Blu-ray Players On Black Friday
Home entertainment is part of Searsâ Black Friday plans, as the retailer is offering $149 Sony and Samsung Blu-ray Disc players, among other deals, according to ads leaked online. The price point represents a $50 drop from current retail pricing, but retail analysts expect other stores to offer name-brand players at even lower prices. Ex-Image Exec Launches New Distribution Company
David Borshell, former president of Image Entertainment, has formed a new distribution company with home entertainment veteran Andy Reimer and others.â¨â¨ Santa Monica, Calif.-based Inception Media Group (IMG) plans to acquire, produce and distribute independent motion pictures and other filmed entertainment across all media platforms, including theatrical, digital, home video and television. âTransformersâ Moves 7.5 Million Disc Units
Paramount Home Entertainment reports that it sold a healthy 7.5 million DVD/Blu-ray units of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” in its first week of release. The figure includes sell-through and rental sales in North America. First-week sales for “Revenge of the Fallen,” which debuted on Oct. 20, are the best so far in 2009. The studio is also touting the first-week Blu-ray sales as the year’s best, with 1.2 million high-definition discs moved in North America. By Variety
Hints Of An Apple TV Upgrade
A new terms of service agreement from Appleâs iTunes Store makes reference to an Apple TV “software version 3.0.” The current version for the digital media receiver is 2.4. The addition of new Web-based iTunes features such as iTunes LP to Apple TV has Macworld speculating that other Web-powered content services, such as Hulu and Netflix, may soon be on their way from Apple or easy to enable with third-party utilities.
