Rentrak: Free Content, Subscription Services Dominate VOD
Video-on-demand viewers spent more than 3.1 billion hours watching on demand content in 2009, according to home entertainment research firm Rentrak.
The market for âtransaction on demandâ such as pay-per-view movies, however, reamains relatively small. VOD consumers placed more than 208 million transaction orders in 2009, totaling more than $963 million.
That compares to 5.1 billion orders for free on-demand content during the year, as well as 1.6 billion orders based on subscription on-demand services (such as Netflix streaming).
In an average month, 45% of VOD-enabled set-top boxes utilize some sort of on-demand service. âActive usersâ of VOD, Rentrak says, order an average of 16.4 free programs per month, along with 8.7 subscription programs and two movies-on-demand. Via PR Newswire
