GameStop Stores Add Prepaid Cards for Steam Service

While it continues to make its own moves in digital distribution of video games, GameStop is beginning to sell prepaid cards for the Steam digital gaming platform at its brick-and-mortar outlets.

Under terms of the agreement between GameStop and Steam creator Valve Corp., Steam Wallet codes will be available in $20 and $50 denominations, giving PC and Mac gamers access to Steam’s more than 1,800 titles.

The deal is non-exclusive, but GameStop touts its status as the only brick-and-mortar retailer currently offering the cards (via Joystiq).

In fact, the chain acknowledges no competition between the two companies, instead emphasizing the synergies between physical and digital distribution models. “This gives even more options to customers now that they can put money in their Steam Wallet using cash, gift cards or trade credits through our convenient neighborhood locations,” Steve Nix, GameStop’s general manager of digital distribution, says in a statement.
