Media and Entertainment Ambitions Beneath the ‘Surface’?
by Terence Keegan
Microsoft used a Hollywood backdrop on Monday to unveil a line of tablets (or more accurately, as Time notes, PCs), designed “to seamlessly transition between consumption and creation.” But while the devices tout impressive specs, the Surface line as yet incorporates none of the media and entertainment tie-ins that tech sites had expected.
Microsoft states that the device would be compatible with music, movie, and game apps from the Windows Store, but it has offered no comment as to whether Surface devices will incorporate Xbox entertainment services and e-reader functions through the company’s partnership with Barnes & Noble.
More on what the Surface may hold for Microsoft and entertainment companies — as well as what the devices may presage for PC makers and retailers — at Time and PC World.
