Sony To Acquire Cloud Gaming Company Gaikai
With Sony Computer Entertainment announcing on Monday its plan to acquire streaming video game service Gaikai for approximately $380 million, speculation abounds on how Sony will incorporate PlayStation gaming and other entertainment into its promised “new cloud service.”
According to PC World, the Gaikai acquisition most plausibly presages a new means of delivering “classic” PlayStation games to current-generation users. Ars Technica points out that streaming could also provide a more efficient means of delivering video game demos than downloads. But the sites agree that an “online-only” successor to the PlayStation 3 console is unlikely: certain types of video games will still demand processing power from “local” hardware.
Interestingly, Gaikai has only recently embarked with Sony rivals LG and Samsung on cloud video game services for the companies’ smart TVs.
