Technicolor Slates Summer Opening for New Film Lab in Glendale

Following shutdown of its film processing facility at Universal Studios in June, Technicolor will open a smaller film lab in nearby Glendale, Calif., the Los Angeles Times reports.

The company will rehire approximately 100 employees from the Universal lab to work in the new, 40,000-square-foot facility. The lab will offer color correction, processing of film negatives, and development of 70mm theatrical prints for Imax and other big-screen exhibitions, according to the report.

Forthcoming 3D TV Network Takes Wraps Off Programming Slate

Sony Corp., Discovery Communications and Imax unveiled a mix of original programs and acquisitions for their as-yet-unnamed 3D television channel, set for debut next year (via the Hollywood Reporter).

Sony will contribute its films “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” and “Monster House.” Discovery will add its documentary “Attack of the Giant Jellyfish” and possessed-animal series “The Haunted,” while Imax will contribute its specials “Into the Deep 3D” and “Magnificent Desolation:  Walking on the Moon 3D.”

Hour-long original series will include “Abandoned Planet,” a look at abandoned cities, and “Jewels of the World,” profiles of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Samsung Nets Blu-ray 3D Exclusive On DreamWorks’ ‘Dragon’

Announcing a new slate of 3D electronics today, Samsung Electronics said that it would be the exclusive distributor this fall of the 3D Blu-ray version of DreamWorks Animaton’s “How To Train Your Dragon.” The disc will be featured in Samsung’s 3D starter kit, which also includes two pairs of Samsung 3D glasses for at-home viewing.

Samsung’s current 3D starter kit includes a Blu-ray 3D copy of the studio’s “Monsters Vs. Aliens.” Other 3D discs slated for distribution by the electronics company include IMAX’s original productions “Into the Deep” and “Galapagos,” and Giant Screen Films’ “Mummies: Secrets of the Pharoahs.”

Among the new 3D hardware is a portable Blu-ray 3D player and three standalone Blu-ray 3D decks, as well as four 3D LED and Plasma TVs.

Executive Team In Place For 3D TV Network

Sony Corp., Discovery Communications, and IMAX Corp. announced that Discovery Channel executive Tom Cosgrove has been named President/CEO of the joint venture between the companies to develop a 3D television network. Cosgrove, who most recently served as COO of the Discovery Channel, oversees all business and creative areas of the joint venture, with a general objective of driving consumer adoption of 3D televisions.

The joint venture’s team also includes Rebecca Glashow, Discovery Communications’ SVP Digital Distribution, who will oversee cable and satellite distribution for the 3D channel. Discovery, Sony, Imax Plan 3D TV Channel

Discovery Communications, operator of the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet and other cable networks,  is partnering with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Imax Corp. to launch a 3D channel in the U.S. in 2011, according to the Los Angeles Times. The channel would be distributed through Discovery and will showcase films from Sony and Imax, producer of such releases as “Under the Sea 3D” and “Space Station 3D.” By the Los Angeles Times
