It was last October that Mike Dunn, president of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, shared his studio’s vision for a closer relationship between content companies and the consumer electronics industry.

To build this “digital bridge,” Dunn announced that the studio would launch the Fox Innovation Lab, which would establish a digital-centric relationship between the studio and consumer electronics and technology companies, with the intent of enhancing the consumer experience.

On Sept. 4, the Fox Innovation Lab officially got off the ground, with Dunn announcing a new partnership with Samsung Electronics, one that will see the two companies enabling digital playback technology for premium content.

“Consumer electronics, Hollywood studios and — most importantly — consumers will benefit from our work to deliver an entertainment experience fit for today’s digital lifestyle,” Dunn said, speaking at the annual IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin. “The consumer demand for high-quality premium content continues to increase and evolve. We focus on making the experience richer and more immersive. We want our audience to love the movie and love the experience of watching it. And that is why we are working with Samsung.”

Part of Fox and Samsung’s focus will be implementing Secure Content Storage Association (SCSA) technology, which enables premium digital entertainment content — including high-def and 4K Ultra HD content — to be securely transferred and viewed across all devices. Fox is one of the founding members of SCSA and Samsung recently joined the group.

“We are bringing our super high quality content only to companies like Samsung, that commit to SCSA technology,” Dunn said. “That’s a technology that will liberate consumers It helps them to move premium content easily from device to device.

“The challenge with UHD movies is this: How can consumers move super large files, quickly and efficiently to a Samsung Curved UHD TV or a tablet? SCSA will help solve this.”

Michael Zoeller, Samsung’s European senior director of sales and marketing, said the partnership will help Samsung become a front-runner in the 4K industry. “We will provide consumers with the highest quality content from Hollywood studios through a download service,” he said. “It’s very exciting to show that we’re forging a clear path for UHD.”

Along those lines, Fox announced it will make its entire slate of summer theatrical releases — including X-Men: Days of Future Past and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes — available in 4K for Samsung, including some on Samsung’s UHD Video Pack, the 500 GB drive pre-loaded with UHD 4K movies from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Paramount Home Media Distribution and other studios.
